Mediation is an out-of-court process in which a trained mediator is employed to assist in working out terms of agreement, no matter what the dispute.
In Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley Counties, no court time will be given for final hearings unless certification is provided to the Court that a mediator has already worked with the individuals to try to resolve the case. Our experience with mediation is that over 75% of cases resolve, completely, in mediation.
Patricia O. DeTreville has been a trained Family Law mediator since 1997. She has the further background of being a Family Law attorney since 1986. She brings to mediation the experience and the skills necessary to assist in solving problems. Patience and tact are also necessary in working with individuals in mediation, and the importance of those acquired skills cannot be overstated.
In cases for which Ms. DeTreville serves as the mediator, mediation sessions are usually held here in our offices, located at 714 St. Andrews Boulevard. The decision on the amount of time needed for the mediation is estimated by the individuals involved, whether that is a whole day or a half day. When the date/time of mediation is confirmed, information outlining the rules of mediation will be mailed to each person. Our office provides privacy for everyone, along with Wi-Fi access. Parking is free, right on site.
Mediation is greatly favored by our Family Court judges, and by Court Administration, as being an effective way to solve problems. Those people who use mediation to resolve family law issues are almost always highly appreciative of that opportunity, and respectful of the process itself.
To select Ms. DeTreville as your mediator, contact our office to discuss your scheduling needs. Sometimes the Family Court itself will demand an emergency mediation, and Ms. DeTreville is able to offer non-traditional times for meeting, such as weekends. Let us know your situation, and we will work with you to solve problems.
